| 21st August: Nice little collection of Bug life makes a change, all from Rob Mills. • Sarcophaga sp (Flesh fly) - Almost impossible to separate Sarcophaga species from pics, I'm afraid. • Stenodema sp (Mirid grass bug) - Only got this view and need to see other details to determine exact species. • Entrance to German Wasps nest. • Tachina fera (Tachanid fly)     |

| 17 August: My House Martins are definitely now on to their 3rd brood. Spotted Flycatchers fledged two young and inspection of nest afterwards found two infertile eggs. Good to find family of Kestrels along Back Drove on straw bale stack. Parents with two young. I haven't recorded successful Kestrels in parish for over two years before this. Several groups of Linnets about various parts of fens. PM. A trip round the fens didn't find much of interest except it was good to see a family of Kestrels along Back Drove on a straw bale stack. Two adults and two young. Skylarks and Corn Buntings were around but difficult to count because they were mobile and feeding. Usual sightings of Common Buzzards. Again it was noticeable the lack of Dragonfly species in general. Fascinating to watch a Great Diving Beetle by Claytons Bridge. Cameras not to hand though. PM & ID. |
| 16 August: The Barn Owl season is very out of sync. There are a lot of late starters, no doubt because the weather has improved, the vole population is on the up, which often happens later in the season after a poor start, so birds are coming into breeding condition and having a go. But there are also those that started in due time, so we had yesterday, for example, a brood that were on the point of flying, and a mile or two down the road, a bird that had just laid her first egg - and not a second brood. Productivity varies with locality. Apparently Peterborough is having a normal year, Norfolk is pushed to see a Barn Owl let alone find breeding pairs. Jake Allsop |
15 August: Silver Y moth, Snail Killing Fly and Roesels Bush Cricket all found by Rob Mills near Nineacre Wood.   |
14 August: Clouded Yellow seen near Nineacre Wood. Rob Mills.  |
13 August: Spotted Flycatchers. Bit of an update, please find attached photo of fledgling taken today, we are now certain that what we saw earlier was in fact 4 adult birds! We are fairly sure that there were 2 young in the nest but have only seen this one since they fledged. Don't know where the other 2 adults have been but it was definitely 4 of them together seen over 3-4 days. Report and picture by Mike Williamson. |
| 11 August: Dead Long-eared Bat found in Wilburton. Joy Prime. We had 1 or 2 Brown Argus in the garden today. An Emerald Damselfly was a first for our garden. Simon Stirrup.  |
10 August: Here are a few images taken in Aldreth recently - male Brimstone, Gatekeeper, Ruddy Darter and Red-tailed Bumblebee. On 8th August I saw a single Painted Lady and Purple Hairstreak in Aldreth. Simon Stirrup.    |
8 August: 1. By Old West River. Flowering Rush and on higher bank Smooth Hawksbeard a very low plant of the Composite family easily overlooked. 2 On Adventurers Drove these White butterflies of Small, Large and Green-veined varieties came to drink on ground. Maybe that patch had some salt in it. They kept coming and going. Photo not too good because taken through car window. Birds in general seen where 1 Kestrel, Linnet family parties, Long Tailed Tit family parties, up to 4 juvenile Willow Warblers, Corn and Reed Buntings. Common Whitethroats. Dragonfly numbers well down on average years. Abt 3-4 Brown Hawkers, 3-4 Southern Hawkers, 1 Red-eyed Damselfly on Old West River lily pads. No Black-tailed Skimmers on OWR where normally by now there would be many males on there territories, few Common Darters. Not good in general. Still no small butterflies like Common Blue, Brown Argus, Small Copper. Plenty of Peacocks and some Small Tortoiseshells. 1 Red Admiral and many of the Whites.Elsewhere Spotted Flycatchers fledged possibly 3 young and watched as parents taught young to catch butterflies. House Martins fledged Aldreth Road. Maybe settling in for third brood. PM & ID.    |
