| BREAKING NEWS: August/September 2012 |
29th September: Out on fens today found these Shaggy Inkcaps along Dambank. Quite a large amount actually. Gravel Pit Drove where some crows were harrying a female Marsh Harrier. It had caught something and they wanted a bit of it. Meadow Pipits, Linnets, Greenfinches in small numbers. No sign of any Wheatears which should come through about now. Maybe they dont like our current weather and are going straight over. Also seen were Kestrels and a juvenile Hobby. Hirundines all travelling south feeding as they go. PM & ID  |
| 23rd September: Raptor Watch 10.00 - 12.00. North Hill Haddenham TL 445762 Sun, clear sky, cloud gradually increased to 4/8, wind zero to start gradually increased to a NNE breeze. First Buzzard seen at 10.16. 15 Buzzards (2 seen moving purposely NNE along the Ouse Washes) , 2 Sparrowhawks, 3 Kestrels. 1 Siskin flying East. 2 Linnets South. Also local Chaffinches, Bullfinch and a Lesser Whitethroat. Owen Marks |
22nd September: Male Common Darter taken near Nine-acre Wood this afternoon. While there 3 Buzzards flew over, high up, heading south. SS |
19th September: In Haddenham Non-Conformist Old Cemetry today. Up to 8 Red Admirals feeding on Ivy flowers.Both Southern and Migrant Hawker dragonflies present. Found female Speckled Bush Cricket sunning itself on Blackberry leaves. Compare with male Speckled Bush Cricket found by Simon (see below, 13th Sept). They are about same size. PM  |
| 16th September: Whilst gardening at the weekend, I saw a Dark Bush-cricket and had a Siskin fly over. SS |
15th September: A couple of Small Tortoiseshell images taken in our Aldreth garden. SS  |
15th September: Gypsywort, Rally field pond (photos). Back Drove. Marsh Harrier. In Drain and around Water Mint. Emperor and Migrant Hawker Dragonflies. On drove Wild Radish, Toadflax. PM   |
13th September: Here are a couple of images of a Speckled Bush-cricket which we found in our cottage (Aldreth) yesterday - amazing antennae. Simon Stirrup  |
12th September: Galls Fen Drove 2 Whinchats including one male still in fine summer plumage. Foulmire Drove a dead Chinese Water Deer. First definitive evidence we have them. Puffballs on Dambank Drove. PM & ID  |
| 10th September: Good to see a nice good number of people being rowed round water in canoes and other boats by members of HCS. Thanks to Wendy and Brian for hospitality. Many dragonflies etc including Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor and Ruddy Darters. 2 Kingfishers about and Jay (not common in Haddenham). PM Report of 13 Painted Lady butterflies feeding on Ivy flowers in a Wilburton garden. These are turning up more now. Red Admirals still scarce. PM |
3rd September: Hog Hill Drove. Found some Amphibious Bistort. Not much else except Hobby and Kestrel. Local farmland birds have gone somewhere else for a while I expect but will be back. This tends to happen most years. PM & ID  |
| 31st August: Saw Hobby over Aldreth Road this morning, 3 juvenile hobbys and adult by The Boot this evening, and a juvenile Marsh Harrier. Simon Stirrup |

| 25th August: American Golden Plover found with flock of Eurasian Golden Plovers but site kept confidential just now because of local farmers busy with harvest and birders would disrupt harvesting operations and machinery. PM |
22nd August: Went round fens today. Bit windy so birds not showing much. Did find on Gravel Pit Drove 1 Small Copper butterfly and some Water Chickweed both pictured. PM&ID  |

| 15th August: Simon Stirrup: Last 2 days - Common Sandpiper calling as it flew south over Ewell Fen. Willow Warbler at Berry Fen corner. First seen this year. |

| 11th August: 400-500 Lapwings evening flighting over Aldreth and Adventurers fens. Is this a bit early for that behaviour and are they locals or the first arrivals from Easter Europe? Also Female/immature Marsh Harrier hunting over sugar beet. Grey and Red-legged Partridges calling. Also watched up to 8-9 Purple Hairstreak butterflies on local oak trees, Tinkers Lane. PM I&SD |
9th August: Oak Bracket (Inonotus dryadeus ) fungi found at base of Oak tree in Tinkers Lane.  |
| 8th August: 5+ Purple Hairstreaks around the top of an oak at the end of Tinkers Lane this evening. Simon Stirrup A report from Jake Allsop says he saw a male Marsh Harrier near to Gravel Pit Drove and, most surprising, was a Painted Lady butterfy on his Buddleah. This was a surprise considering little else is feeding on those flowers this year. PM |
